About St. Andrew's
The Church
Built: 1911 - 14, extended 1962 The Church is built on a site that slopes steeply to the south east. The main body of the church remains much as built although it was extended at the west end in 1962 by John Stammers, forming a narthex with balcony seats above.
The BellThere is one bell in the tower, which is rung regularly before services and at other appropriate times. The bell was cast in 1914 by the Whitechapel foundry (then trading under the Mears & Stainbank name). It is 24 1/8" in diameter and is believed to weigh about 3cwt. It contains a simple inscription relating to its manufacture and is hung for ringing.
The Hall St Andrew’s Church Hall is available for use by the wider community. Currently many clubs and organisations meet on a regular basis here including Guides, Over 50’s dance group, Scottish Country Dancing, Weight Watchers, Little Kickers, etc. The Hall is available for regular bookings or for one-off hire for special events. The large room of the hall can accommodate about 65 people for a ‘sit-down’ event around tables, or a bit more for stand-up or ‘performance’ events. Amenities in the hall include: full disabled access including toilet facilities; a servery, a small kitchen with microwave, two ovens and refrigerator, stage, fold out tables, smaller square tables, chairs, cutlery and dishes. (St Andrew’s is a Fairtrade Parish and groups using the facilities are encouraged to use fairly traded foodstuffs (tea and coffee in particular) whenever possible.) There is also a Committee Room and Club Room in the Hall for smaller meetings and events. Go here for more information. |
